i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling) i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true) and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)" |
The first time I read this poem, I was able to get a vague meaning but was very confused and struggling to grasp a deeper meaning. The structure and figurative language was puzzling. One critique analyzed "i fear no fate(for you are my fate)" as "Cummings uses parenthesis to show the reader a different, more personal side of his love for this person. " I agree with this analysis because "i fear no fate" shows that E.E Cummings believes there is no obstacles, just his love for this one person. Through this, I was able to understand the structure of the poem. The inside of the parenthesis gave the deeper meaning of the poem that lied outside the parenthesis. This poem was also filled with figurative language. In the second stanza it says "whatever a sun will always sing is you". This gives an image of the sun's warmth or the warm feeling of a song. This expresses how the speaker feels about their love, the feeling they get. Continuing with this feeling, the author creates a motif. It says "i carry your heart with me... i am never without it". It is always referred to that Cummings is always with the person he loves. They have a bond that ties them together, no matter how far apart they are. In this analysis I was able to get a deeper meaning about the poem and why it was written the way it was. The theme of this poem is that true, passionate love never ends and nothing can keep you from it.
